#HumansofBPP photography competition

The park’s #HumansofBPP photography competition was a great success. It ran throughout 2021 on Instagram and received over 165 entries. A winner and 5 runners up were chosen for each season (see below for the full list) and their photos are on display in the Homestead Courtyard until end January 2022.

The competition was so successful we decided to run it again. Click here for details of the 2022 competition.

A true picture of the park

The photos really celebrate the park, its diverse visitors and the many different activities and events that draw people to BPP. The images include: swimmers, people (and dogs!) attending the dog show, runners, tree climbers, children playing on swings, families sledging in the snow, the skate park in action, people enjoying the formal gardens, joyful play in puddles and in the woods, and children posing with the much-loved squirrel statue.

The inception of the project

The competition came about thanks to Lewisham Local who ran a networking project in early 2021 to get local organisations working together. Through that initiative, Fatma Keeley, the photographer behind Smiley Huseyin Photography, and Lucy, BPP’s Community Engagement Officer, got in touch. Fatma mentioned the much acclaimed Humans of New York photography project and just like that, the Humans of BPP photography competition was born.  Fatma kindly volunteered her time throughout the year to help run the competition.

Private view and prize-giving ceremony

On 9th December 2021, there was a private view for the winners and runners up and their families.  53 people attended, including Councillor Patrick Codd, Cabinet Member for Environment & Transport, who spoke about the importance of BPP and all Lewisham parks to residents, especially over the last 2 years. Councillor Codd awarded the prizes to the photographers – a blown up print of their image for all winners and runners up, and for the four winners, a BPP tote bag too. Scroll down to see the full list of winners and runners up.

Fatma snapped away at the private view to record the evening’s events.  It was a heart-warming evening, full of community spirit and joy. Park users came together over their shared love of the park and of photography. Homestead Café pizzas and hot drinks rounded the evening off nicely!
